In the manic world we live in, juggling work, family, and social commitments can leave little time to focus on our own personal well-being. But when it comes to health and fitness, consistency is the secret sauce that transforms short-term efforts into lasting success, so it’s super important to find whatever way we can to build those healthy habits.
Small and sustainable
Making small changes over time can make a huge difference to your progress long term. Even something that seems negligible on its own, done repeatedly can have a positive outcome. Whether it’s incorporating daily exercise, preparing nutritious meals or getting enough sleep, small consistent actions gradually become ingrained in your routine, making them more likely to stick and more likely to yield results.
If you want to make some healthy habit changes, start by picking the lowest hanging fruit – the thing that is going to be easiest for you to do.
Let’s say you want to increase your steps. Instead of saying, “I’m going to walk 10k steps per day!” 💪 and then failing after day two 🤦♀️, take a look at how many steps you are currently getting and just increase it a little bit. If you’re currently getting 5k steps, try for 6k steps and then when you’re comfortably hitting that number every day, up it again. In time you will be hitting that magic 10k steps! 🏃♀️
Overcoming plateaus
On a health and fitness journey, progress is not always linear. Many of us experience plateaus where we seem to hit a wall, but consistency is the key to pushing through these plateaus too. By sticking to your programme and keeping up your physical activity, following a balanced diet and prioritising rest, your body will adapt and overcome obstacles, leading to continued improvement.
Busy schedules
For busy people, time is precious. And the good news is that being consistent doesn’t necessarily mean spending hours pounding the pavements or lengthy meal preparations. It’s about finding small practices that fit into your schedule.
Short, focused workouts performed at high intensity (like the ones we do in the gym! 🏋️♀️) and some weekend meal prep hacks (like the ones we share on socials! 🥗) can contribute significantly to your overall health and fitness without taking a ton of time out of your day.
Mental and emotional well-being
The benefits of being consistent with your exercise and nutrition go beyond the physical too. Regular exercise has been proven to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. By prioritising self-care, we can better manage the demands of our daily lives.
Establishing a routine that includes exercise, healthy nutrition and adequate sleep can contribute to improved mood and increased resilience in the face of life’s challenges – and let’s face it, there are many of those! 🤪
